Project Introduction

CSMC undertook renewal project of SCS’s W3 Steelmaking Plant No.1 Basic Oxygen Furnace Workshop #1 to #3 BOF Shell, and Trunnion Ring Shaft and Tilting System. The project lasted 2 years and 8 months since its start in July 2020; under planning instructions of CSC W3 as well as assistance and collaboration of W6, Y6 and supporting suppliers, CSMC’s taskforce has fully cooperated with CSC in scheduling worksite production and arranging respective progressions. When confronting the high-temperature of BOF production site, the construction specification limitations, the structural interference of facilities, the confined spaces that are difficult to disassemble and assemble large-scale components in, the restricted weld quality specifications, the lack of workforce due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the urge to keep a normal production despite all the above, the construction period was intense and challenging difficulties were diverse. Via comprehensive construction planning and high-performance project management, CSMC actively integrated temporary tracks for transporting Trunnion Ring Shaft, using turntable-equipped large lifting trolleys as well as small lifting trolleys for positioning the furnace shell, where an innovative swivel method was adopted to disassemble and install the large-scale Furnace Shell and Trunnion Ring Shaft, together with a design of sliding hoist to handle and install the Bull Gear and the corresponding coordination; 3 sets of jigs were designed for installing the over-hung Vessel Guide (the horizontal moving system), which effectively overcame respective interfacing issues within the worksite and gradually optimized respective engineering details, exerting CSMC Team’s spirit of continued improvements and steadily speeding up the project with shortened construction periods (target and actual construction periods of 3 on-site disassemble/installation sessions were respectively 118 /118 days, 102/99 days and 103/97 days). Respective BOFs were completed smoothly as scheduled with specified quality and zero incidents. Hot test-run of the last BOF started on March 6th, 2023, and it was put into production. The project was completed successfully; it contributed again to stabilizing the steel making process. CSC Steel Making Plant has even issued a Thank You Note to highly acknowledge the project’s exceptional engineering quality and construction safety.
